Bönan

Sea breeze, lapping waves, and red boathouses – welcome to Bönan, a seaside gem where both pace and pulse naturally slow down. Here, you’ll find salty walks by the water, the scent of smoked salmon in the air, and a closeness to nature that you can feel in your whole body.

Just outside Gävle lies Bönan, a charming fishing village known for its colourful boat sheds, rich coastal heritage and tranquil atmosphere. It’s a peaceful escape where time seems to stand still.

Stroll along the shoreline, rest by one of the old fishing huts, and soak in the history – Bönan has been a fishing village since the 1600s, and the traditions are still alive today. Be sure to try the famous smoked salmon from the local smokehouse – a true favourite among both locals and visitors.

You’ll also find Böna Café – a lovely spot for coffee and cake in the sun – and a small lighthouse museum where you can explore the area’s maritime past.

Getting here is easy by car or bus from Gävle city centre. Arriving by boat? You can dock at the municipal pier (nautical chart 534), but do note that easterly winds can cause swell. The GPS coordinates for Bönan are N 60°44.238ʹ E 17°18.564ʹ (WGS84).

Whether you're here for a picnic at sunset, a dip in the sea or just a quiet moment on the rocks, it's easy to see why so many choose to return to Bönan – a place by the sea that moves in its own rhythm.
